Home Business Goals

If you've ever lost your desire to build your home business or you're having problems motivating yourself to start one, take time out to ask yourself a few very important questions. You must know your why and set some home business goals to keep your desire strong.

What Are My Short Term Goals?

To know your why for your business, write down some things you'd like to accomplish in the next couple of months. If all of your goals are long term, it will be hard to keep plugging away when there aren't any immediate results. Hey... we are human and need short term gratification from time to time. It doesn't mean we're not to plan for the future. But it does mean that it's OK to want things now. God knows we have immediate needs. "...for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Matthew 6:32-33

What Are My Long Term Goals?

Know your why for long term goals. If you're too short sighted, you are bound to get hung up on goals that just aren't very motivating. Especially if they are too materialistic. Sooner or later you'll lose your drive because these types of goals don't have much substance or value.

The Bible says, "For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."

Working for money just for the sake of building up a big bank account is wrong. Know why you want the money and be very specific. Don't just say, I want to have a lot of money in 10 years. But rather, I want to have $20,000 by June, 2020 to contribute to our church building fund or I want $5,000/extra per month by 2020 to support a missionary in Haiti.

Do My Goals please God?

I like to picture myself handing Jesus my gifts after I've met Him at the pearly gates the second I've breathed my last breath here in my earthly body. When I take the time out to really focus on what will please Him, my short sighted goals quickly vanish and I can see what is more important to work on. It really helps to know my why and get my priorities in order.

Are My Goals Believable?

My Bible says, "And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive" (Matthew 21:22). Sometimes I ask for too much and then don't have the faith to take the steps to get there because my why is so grandiose. At other times I have too little faith and I become despondent and unmotivated. But guess what? I found something that works quite nicely for me and might work for you as well to "know your why"...

Have you ever thought to ask God for goals you can believe in? I tried this and it helps me get the "right sized" believable goals that I can work toward with confidence knowing I have consulted with God about them.

How Committed Am I To Reach My Goals?

I often think of the passage in the Bible when Mary and Joseph were distraught to find that Jesus wasn't in their company as they traveled home after the the feast of the Passover in Jerusalem. Instead he tarried behind. When they finally tracked him down (finding him in the temple), his answer to them was, "How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? Luke 2:49

I don't know about you, but I want to be about my Father's business.

Your real desire should be to conform your "why" to his. Be willing to sacrifice the temporal for the spiritual rewards. Perhaps you'll need to give up your T.V. shows, or night out with the boys, or your Wednesday night euchre game. Ever thought God doesn't want you doing those things anyway? Know your why and many things that once seemed impossible to give up suddenly lose the power they had over you. You'll free up those wasted hours to work on your business. Know your why and commit yourself to be "about your Father's business."

Will My Goals Benefit Others?

If your motive for building your business is service to others, you'll have an easier time of it. I've found myself crying and getting frustrated over certain things only to discover that I'm working in my own power for my own selfish end! Oh boy...that doesn't work and my stress level proves it. Not until I take time out to pray and ask God to come into my work and focus on others' needs does the road gets smoother and the burden lighter. When you know your why is helping others, rest assured that God will help you.

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Matthew 12:28-30)

Have I Set A Date For Each Goal's Fruition?

I've found that setting deadlines for my goals helps to clarify the steps necessary to reach them and it puts a little pressure on me to prepare and produce. Not having a date to work towards leaves me "wandering in the wilderness" so to speak. I'm easily distracted and find myself doing a lot of things that are keeping me busy but not productive. When I know my why and set end dates for accomplishing my goals, I'm more apt to keep focused on the task at hand. It discourages my tendency to "go off on bunny trails".

Do I Deserve The Satisfaction And Happiness The Accomplishment Of My Goals May Bring?

I hate to be so blunt as to say, No....actually none of us deserves anything but death and punishment in hell for wrongs committed. We're nothing but sinners saved by grace so let's not get puffed up thinking we deserve more than we have. It will only leave us feeling unhappy and frustrated and kill our motivation to work.

On the other hand, we don't want to feel so guilty that we believe God could never use us or bless us.

We need to remind ourselves over and over again that we are forgiven and our sins are forgotten and under the blood. We can quit beating ourselves over the head and stop sabotaging our success any time we decide to.

God can use you again no matter how badly you have messed up. There were many wicked sinners in the Bible who God used greatly after they sinned. If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour, please read "The Gospel" now.

Know the One who died for you, Know your why for building your business, and set your home business goals. Help others along the way and you'll be well on your way to experiencing success in your home based business and service for the Lord.

The Bible says, "The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil."

It's time to leave your past behind and take another step (however small) toward your goals and God's plan for your life.
